Description
- Valencian School, 16th century
- The Holy Family with the infant Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist
- oil on oak panel, unframed
Condition
The uncradled panel is very slightly bowed. A vertical panel join, 1 inch from the right margin, has moved slightly forming a crack in the paint surface that runs the length of the panel, visible in the catalogue illustration. There is a smaller split, 2 inches in length, 3/4 of an inch from the lower left margin. There are otherwise only a few surface scratches and small loses. The varnish appears to be thick and discoloured.
Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals minor scattered retouches and strengthenings, for example in the Virgin's hand, in the outline of the face of St John the Baptist, and in the folds of the drapery of St John the Evangelist.
