Condition
Both canvasses have been relined.
"The Departure of the Prodigal Son": The paint surface is in good condition, if a little dark. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows small scattered cosmetic retouchings; two repairs to small holes in the lower right corner; and restoration to a 6 cm. line along the lower margin centre right.
"The Return of the Prodigal Son": the paint surface is brighter overall and colours are well- preserved. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows very small scattered retouchings throughout, particularly in the sky and in the figure group centre. A repair to fine horizontal scratch (5 cm.) along by the kneeling Son. a few other very small repairs (all measuring less than 1 cm.)
The lots are offered in matching heavy carved gilt wood frames, in very good condition.
