Literature

K.T. Parker and J. Mathey, Antoine Watteau, Catalogue complet de son oeuvre dessiné, Paris 1957, vol. II, no. 747, reproduced;
P. Rosenberg and L.-A. Prat, Antoine Watteau, 1684-1721, Catalogue raisonné des dessins, Milan 1996, vol. lII, p. 1326, no. R666, reproduced p. 1327 (as "difficile de l'accepter sans réserve parmi les oeuvre authentiques").

Condition

Hinged in the middle to both sides, but free at the top and bottom. Overall color of the original is more grayish and the red chalk is less vivid than the image in the catalogue. The paper, originally beige, has now a grayish tint, possibly due to a damage. At the top there are traces of very minor water damage. The drawing paper has suffered and the chalk seems to have lost some of its original strength. There are black pen and ink lines around the drawing visible in the catalogue. Sold in a wooden and fake tortoiseshell frame.

Catalogue Note

Rosenberg and Prat's cautious published judgement of this drawing was based on photographs.  Having seen the original, they consider that it is most likely a faint genuine drawing by Watteau, extensively strengthened by another hand.  The invention is, however, quintessential Watteau.
