Catalogue Note

Few composition drawings by Jouvenet are known, but this work can be convincingly compared in style with, for example, his study, in Leipzig, for the painting of The Last Supper exhibited at the Salon of 1704 (location unknown).Other composition drawings by Jouvenet were published by Antoine Schnapper in Master Drawings in 1967.It is possible that this drawing relates to a series of paintings illustrating the life of St. Nicholas, commissioned in 1687 for the Chapelle Saint-Nicolas in the former parish church of Versailles, but those paintings are now untraced, and their compositions unknown.3
