Catalogue Note
See note to preceding lot.
Drawn and washed with light and dark tonalities of gray and brown wash, this drawing is enriched by the lively and abundant use of white heightening. It is on a mount, now partly cut down at the bottom, which appears very similar to the one on which lot 56 is mounted; that mount bears the initials of the English collector John Barnard (d. 1784), and his inscription on the reverse, 'Bought at the Sale of Mr Zuccarelli's Drawings/at Langfords. the 3rd: April 1769. It has not been possible to trace any such sale, but whenever it was that Barnard actually acquired lot 56, he may well also have bought the present drawing at the same time.
