Catalogue Note

This large, imaginary landscape and the similar drawing in the following lot may well both date from one of the artist's sojourns in England, where he worked from 1752 until 1762, and again from 1765 to 1771.  The 1769 sale referred to in John Barnard's inscription on the reverse of the mount provides, however, a terminus ante quem for the dating of the present sheet.  Such pictorial and finished drawings must have been made as works of art in their own right, for sale to collectors, or possibly to serve as modelli to be shown to potential clients for paintings.

Zuccarelli seems inspired here by the sort of imaginary Venetian landscapes in which Marco Ricci specialised, although Morassi (loc. cit.) stresses a stylistic link also with Claude Lorrain, and a debt to Francesco Guardi.  The present sheet was formerly part of the famous collection of Venetian drawings formed by the Duc de Talleyrand, who seems to have inherited a passion for Venetian art from his uncle the Marquis de Biron (1859-1939).1  For further information on the Talleyrand collection, see note to lot 53.
