Catalogue Note
Although red chalk drawings by Turchi are not otherwise known, this figure's facial type is very comparable to those seen in the artist's more familiar drawings in pen and ink and wash. The subtlety in the use of the red chalk is enhanced by the strong definition of light and shadow, describing the muscles of this figure, most probably a St. Sebastian. The left hand, so strongly defined, is not far from others seen in the figure of St Joseph, in a pen and ink drawing by Turchi for a Nativity, in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.1
