Catalogue Note
Having served as an apprentice under James Wyatt and then worked for three decades in the office of Sir John Soane, Joseph Gandy was an architect by profession. Alongside this, he was well known as a watercolorist and he regularly exhibited large-scale architectural perspectives, inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, at the Royal Academy. Like his contemporaries, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable, Gandy was also interested in working directly from nature. The present lot was painted on 31 August 1822 and shows the beach at Shoreham in Sussex, on the English south coast. The sheet is one of a number of works that Gandy created in the 1820s which were acquired by Richard Westmacott, a friend of the artist and prominent sculptor. Westmacott later assembled two albums from this collection which he presented to his daughter Maria Poole. One of these albums is now in Sir John Soane Museum, London, while the other was sold by Richard Feigen in 2004, the individual sheets having been carefully separated.
