Condition

Laid down and hinged to the upper margin of the window mount. There is a small brown stain located on the child's neck and some light brown staining around the outer edges of the sheet. There is a small crease in the paper at the lower right corner. Red chalk remains strong and vibrant. Sold in a gilded frame.

Catalogue Note

This is a very tender image of a young child sleeping.  As discussed in the note to lot 113, Greuze produced a number of genre scenes where children played a prominent role.  Here the mood is tranquil and calm and Greuze has clearly studied this child from life.
