Catalogue Note
The same view was depicted, from a higher viewpoint in Kleve itself, by Joris van der Haagen, in a drawing now in Berlin.1 On the basis of a photograph, Dr. Hans-Ulrich Beck accepted another, squarer version of part of this composition (sold, Amsterdam, Sotheby Mak van Waay, 21 March 1977, lot 135), as an autograph work by van Goyen, dating from circa 1645, and included that drawing as such in his catalogue raisonné.2 Following the subsequent emergence of the present drawing, however, Dr. Beck concluded that his no. 775C is inferior in quality, and is most probably a copy of this drawing, by another hand.
