Catalogue Note
This is a preparatory study for a watercolor last recorded in a Parisian private collection.1 Another similar drawing by Barye, Tiger devouring a horse, was formerly in the George Haviland and Georges Viau collections, then sold from the estate of Benjamin Sonnenberg.2 In that drawing, as Baillio noted (see Exhibited), the tiger is in profile and in the forefront of the composition, while the horse is barely delineated.
