Catalogue Note
The present drawing, showing two horses fighting one another in their stable, can be dated to circa 1818 due its close relationship with a very rare lithograph of the same subject which is known to have been executed in that year.1 Two further drawings by Géricault produced in connection with this project are known, the first of which, a rapidly drawn sketch 2 in black chalk, composed in reverse to the final lithograph, may well have been drawn by the artist in the stables of his rampaging subjects. A second preparatory drawing, now only known from a copy made by Charles Cournault in 1851, is oriented in the same direction as both our drawing and the lithograph. Although it is slightly surprising that two of the three drawings connected with the lithograph are in the same direction as the print, and Philippe Grunchec does not accept the attribution of the present drawing, Germain Bazin seems to have been in no doubt about the authenticity of either of these drawings. Describing the present lot in his catalogue raisonné, he praises the work's quality, stating that this prevents him from removing it from Gericault’s oeuvre.3
