Catalogue Note
The 'Second French Revolution' of July 1830, which saw the Bourbon King Charles X overthrown, to be replaced by Louis-Philippe, duc d'Orléans, is known in French as the Trois Glorieuses, in reference to the fact that the key action in this major upheaval took place over just three days, 27-29 July. The events were precipitated by a series of autocratic and anti-democratic actions by the King, culminating in his signing, on 25 July, of the 'Ordinances of Saint-Cloud', a set of edicts that suspended the liberty of the press, dissolved the newly elected Chamber of Deputies and excluded the commercial middle class from future elections. By the end of the week, Charles X had been ousted, and this drawing records the scene in one of Paris's grands boulevards during the tumultuous days leading up to his overthrow.
