Condition

Various repaired losses due possibly to silverfish, especially around the upper and right margins and one of approx. 7cm, across the shoulders of the man to the right and in two places across his face and head; one in the lower right corner, and in some other places across the sheet. All repairs have been made with some form of reconstituted paper, which are so well done, that it makes them hard to identify. The surface is slightly uneven, and there is some surface dirt. There are also some brown stains, noticeably one in the lower left corner, another in the upper left corner. The verso looks to have traces of glue from a previous backing and a brown stain to the left. We have not been able to examine the entire verso due to the way it is currently sandwiched into its mount. Sold in a modern painted black frame.

Catalogue Note

The attribution to Antonio Campi is due to Marco Tanzi.  This study, most probably a modello, can be dated to around 1560 when Antonio Campi was influenced by Bernardino Gatti's fresco of the same subject, executed in 1552 for the church of San Pietro a Po, in Cremona.  This drawing was previously incorrectly attributed to Bernardino Gatti.
