One of six illustrations produced by Girodet for Pierre Didot l’aîné’s luxury edition of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s proto-romantic novel, Paul et Virginie. The composition is also known through an elaborate drawing in black chalk and wash, heightened with white, once belonging to Saint-Pierre and now in the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. The application of red chalk to the verso of the present sheet suggests that it was originally used to facilitate the transfer of the composition to the etching plate.
