Catalogue Note

The Festival of the Federation was held in Paris on 14 July 1790, the first anniversary of the fall of the Bastille.  It was intended to be a powerful expression of national unity and fraternity, but was also clearly a military display of unprecedented scale.  The Champ de Mars was excavated to create a vast amphitheatre, and a raised 'altar of the fatherland' was installed at one side, together with a columned tribune for the citizen-king and his family, the members of the Assemblée Nationale, and other dignitaries.  At the other end a temporary triumphal arch was built.  On the day, some fourteen thousand members of the National Guard from all over the country paraded in serried ranks, watched by a vast crowd, estimated at three hundred and fifty thousand, and all the delegates swore allegiance to the nation, the law and the crown.

Dugourc himself proposed to the municipal government of Paris the idea of a large commemorative engraving, and this is the preparatory drawing for that print. See also the following lot.
