Catalogue Note

Born Princess Marie Thérèse Louise of Savoy, the sitter became Princesse de Lamballe in 1767, on her marriage, at the age of seventeen, to Louis Alexandre de Bourbon-Penthièvre, Prince Lamballe.  The Prince, who was heir to the greatest fortune in France, died only a year after they were married, leaving the Princess as a young widow.  She then became a close confidante of Queen Marie Antoinette and was appointed 'Superintendent of the Queen's Household' in 1774.  On 3 September 1792, Princesse Lamballe was brutally murdered by the Revolutionary mob.

The portrait is executed in the manner of artists such as Cochin, Moreau le Jeune and Augustin de Saint-Aubin.
