Catalogue Note

A key element in Boucher's extraordinarily successful artistic business was the production of designs for engraving, which allowed Boucher's imagery to be disseminated much more widely than would be possible simply through his paintings and drawings.  Both of these drawings served as the basis for prints.  Le Retour des Champs was engraved, in the same direction, in crayon manner by L.M. Bonnet, a print that was initially issued in black, and subsequently printed in red ink.  Les Trois Filles was also engraved in crayon manner, but by Gilles Demarteau.  As a pair, the compositions were etched by Gabriel Huquier for his Second Livre de Sujets et pastorals.1
