Condition
The canvas has been strip-lined.
The paint surface is in overall stable condition. The dark areas in the background have worn, and the yellows, reds and greens have thinned slightly, but the thickly applied touches of light are still intact. There are a few scattered discoloured repairs to damages and a small weakening in the canvas - with potential to become a hole - in the handle of the goblet lower right, which requires attention.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows two campaigns of restoration. The earlier campaign consists of minor re-strengthining to some of the still life objects and some small areas of repainting in the dark background, as well as a repair to the aforementioned weakening in the canvas in the goblet lower right.
The more recent campaign of restoration consists of widely-scattered restoration to areas of craquelure throughout the canvas and fine re-strengthening to the still life objects, all these have been very delicately-executed. There is a repaired holes lower left corner, measuring 5 x 6 cm.; two repaired tears on either side of the pack of cards measuring 4 and 5 cm. respectively; and a horizontal repair lower right corner, 11 cm. from the right edge, measuring 10 cm.
This lot is offered in a wood frame, gilded and painted red and green, with small punch hole decoration, in very good condition.
