Condition

The canvas has a firm relining. The varnish is clear and even and the paint surface stable. There are no major damages visible to the naked eye. Visible under ultraviolet light is a campaign of sensitively-executed restoration throughout the sky, focused mainly on minimising the effect of the craquelure and masking two old damages at the centre left of the painting. The first is a horizontal old tear, measuring 6 inches in length; the second, a small triangular damage, measuring approximately 1 inch by 1 inch. Of the strengthenings in the sky, the most significant concentration is in a 4-inch band above the horizon of the distant mountain on the left. Also visible under ultraviolet light are some localised scattered strengthenings in the darker tones of the foreground; for example, in the summit of the rocky outcrop behind the tree, in the branches of the tree, and in the details of the horse on which the lady sits. This lot is offered in a carved and gilt wood frame in fair condition.
