Description
- William Doughty, after Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A.
- Portrait of Georgiana Cavendish, The Duchess of Devonshire (1757 - 1806)
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an old relining. The paint surface is very dirty, and covered by a yellow varnish. It still retains its texture in the sitter, and in some of the foliage. Under drawing is visible.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows delicate infilling of craquelure in the sitter's face, retouching lower left of her skirt, very few scattered retouchings elsewhere. There are no major damages and overall beneath the dirt the paint is in a good state of preservation.
This lot is offered in a heavy gilt wood frame, with decorative mouldings, in good condition.
