Condition

The canvas has been relined. The paint surface is covered by a dirty yellow varnish. There are traces of impasto remaining, but overall paint surface is quite flat and even a little worn in the lower right and left. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals uneven varnish but no evidence of retouching.

Catalogue Note

We are grateful to Dott.ssa Federica Spadotto for endorsing the attribution to Zuccarelli on the basis of photographs, and proposing a date of execution in the 1770s. A similar figure group to that including the fisherman in the present work can be found in another arcadian landscape which she lists as in the Gavazzi collection in Milan (Francesco Zuccarelli, Milan 2007, pp. 174, 350, no. 409, reproduced fig. 409).
