Description
- Genoese School, 17th Century
- A Mediterranean harbour scene with trading barges and Dutch shipping
- signed with monogram lower right: JW
- oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas has an old relining, the paint surface is largely stable and the varnish is even but discoloured. A vertical line runs down the canvas, just to the right of centre, due to a seam - this has been partially restored. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two, older and newer, campaigns of scattered retouchings in the sky; a small repaired damage in the upper left of the sky; some retouchings in the margin and in the clouds, upper left; some old retouchings on the right margin; and some small retouchings in the sails of the ships.
