The canvas is lined, the paint surface is stable and the varnish clear. There is a degree of wear throughout the blue of the mans cloak. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals two campaigns of retouchings, the older ones are mainly strengthenings in the dark tones of the background and clothing, the more recent retouchings are finer and focused mainly in the left of the blue cloak, a few are scattered elsewhere but the mans face remains in seemingly good condition with only two or three minor patches of retouchings.
