Description

  • Portrait of a Lady, half-length, wearing a black dress with a fur trim, a white ruff and cap and holding a white handkerchief
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Probably James Whatman the Younger (1741-1798), Vinters, Kent;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

The canvas is relined. The paint surface requires a new varnish as the old one is no longer effective. There is a small loss 1 cm. long upper centre in the background, and very tiny losses in her ruff and along her jawline. There are small areas where paint is beginning to lift. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows an old milky varnish, some small areas of retouching along the lower and right margins. This lot is offered in a gold frame with some minor knocks, but structurally sound.
