Description

  • Joos de Momper
  • Winter landscape with a caravan of pack donkeys passing through a town, two farmers and their pigs in the foreground
  • oil on oak panel, a fragment

Provenance

With Galerie de Boer, Amsterdam.

Literature

K. Ertz, Josse de Momper the Younger (1564 – 1635), Freren 1986, pp. 277 and 605, cat. no. 517, reproduced p. 276, fig. 317 (as a fragment, and where dated to 1610-1620).

Condition

The panel is made up of three vertical pieces, cradled. There are four splits visible in the recto: one beginning upper right, another beginning mid left, then one that runs horizontally across the centre of the panel, and a smaller split beginning lower right margin. All of these have been repaired and the restoration has slightly discoloured so is visible to the naked eye. The paint surface is very dirty. Thick paint is preserved in the background and in the foreground snow, but there is minor wear in the middle ground especially in the donkeys. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a very opaque varnish that makes old restoration hard to detect. However, one can see the restoration along all splits, as well as some very old spot retouchings in the snowy path and in the sky, and along the lower margin. This lot is offered in a plain wood frame, with some loosening at the corners, but structurally sound.
