Catalogue Note

Goderis is one of the most engaging of the Dutch marine petit-maîtres. The Haarlem patriot Schrivelius, writing in Goderis' own day, described him as a pupil of [Jan] Porcellis.  Some of his work does indeed owe a debt of style to Porcellis, but as pictures like this one, with its pastel tones and concern for topography, amply demonstrate, he was an original talent. Traditionally but wrongly identified as Veere, this picture appears to portray a capriccio view of a Zealand seaport such as Veere, Middelburg and Vlissingen.
A copy of the handwritten expertise by Dr. Walther Bernt, dated November 1972, and with a full attribution to Hans Goderis, accompanies this lot.
