Condition

The panel has a severe crack running vertically from the top to the lower edge. The panel is bowing. Paint loss on left edge of painting and along the top and the lower third of the crack. There are retouchings all along the vertical crack(s) in the panel; retouchings also in hair and costume.

Dr Claus Grimm identified this as one of the earliest works by Jacob van Loo (1614–70). A copy of his letter of expertise dated 25 February 1980 accompanies this lot.
