Venetian School, First Half of the 18th Century

The canvas has been relined. The picture has been fairly recently cleaned and restored and in good overall condition. There are no signs of any major damage or repairs. The flesh tones may have worn a little thin in parts, for example the upper arm, left leg and inner thigh of the right leg, as ultra-violet light reveals that these areas have been strengthened. There is a small repaired 8 cm vertical tear on the elbow. Similarly the shadows and outlines of the right arm and fingers, and those of the draperies upon which it rests have been strengthened. There is some sign of an old vertical scrape or tear running through the forearm, but this is unclear. The head, torso and rest of the body appears very well preserved with only very minor local retouchings in evidence here, and the landscape is likewise largely unaffected apart form a small area upper of retouchings upper right. The restoration has been well carried out and is not obtrusive to the naked eye and the painting should not require any further attention. This lot is offered with a fine gilt Baroque auricular style frame in good condition.
