The canvas has a recent, rather firm relining. The paint surface is secure and reasonably clean, and the painting is in overall moderate condition. There is a fair amount of restoration, some of which is slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouching throughout the face, beard and clothes of Saint Jerome, largely to disguise the effect of craquelure. There are also several patches of restoration in the saint's right hand, his left arm and on the cover of the book, lower right. A band of retouching measuring between approximately 2 and 7 cm is present along the length of the right-hand margin, as well as along parts of the other three margins. The work is offered in a gilt molded frame with floral and fruit ornamentation, with a few minor knocks and losses.
