Literature

J. de Maere and M. Wabbes, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, 3 vols., Brussels 1994, vol. III, reproduced plate 1153.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining. As a result the paint surface has been flattened. The paint surface is secure, stable and clean. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals and even varnish and some localised retouching to the rocks and bridge at lower left, as well as some very small very few scattered retouchings to the seated figure. Overall the work is in very good condition. The painting is offered in a simple wood carved frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The attribution to David Teniers has been confirmed by Frau Dr. Margret Klinge following inspection of the original in 1989. Although the Bessborough sale catalogue of 1801 states that the picture came 'out of the collection of Sir Luke Schaub', it is not among the paintings sold from his Estate in London in 1758.
