Description

  • Adriaen Hanneman
  • Portrait of Mary, Princess of Orange (1631-1660), holding a rose
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The canvas has a firm relining, resulting in a flattened paint surface. The paint surface is secure, stable and very clean. The colours are strong and vibrant. Scattered retouching is faintly visible in the architecture of the background. A repair to a vertical tear measuring approximately 12 cm can be seen just below the right shoulder. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish and infilling to craqulure in the flesh tones. Also revealed are few small scattered retouchings in the sleeves, chest and sky. The work is offered unframed.

Catalogue Note

Mary, Princess Royal, was the eldest daughter of Charles I and his wife, Henrietta Maria. In May 1641 she married William, Prince of Orange and Stadholder of the United Provinces. Their son, William, would later become King William III of England.

Painted in the Netherlands, shortly before Mary returned to England at the Restoration, the prime version of this composition by Hanneman was in the Clarendon Collection (signed and dated 165 (6)?). Identical but unsigned versions were with Charles Newman in 1921 (40 x 32 ½ in) and F. Dahlstrom in Sweden, 1936. There is also a 50 x 40 in. version of the present work at Holkham Hall with differences in the landscape as well as a half-length in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (signed and dated 1659).
