Description
- Robert Walker
- Portrait of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), Lord Protector of England
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 23 November 2006, lot 22.
Condition
The canvas, on what is probably a 19th century stretcher, has been relined. The paint surface is stable and secure. There are two minor scratches, at the lower right and left edge respectively, both measuring approximately 5 cm. There is a very small paint loss just above the sitter's head. On the forehead of the sitter, a very small area of infilling to craqulure can be seen and very minor infilling is also visible to the left of the nose. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an uneven varnish and retouching to the right shoulder, as well as small scattered retouchings to the background.
The work is offered in a gilt molded frame with a few very minor losses.
