Condition
The panel, composed of two horizontal planks of wood, is uncradled. The surface is flat. The paint surface is secure, stable and clean. There are traces of good quality impasto in the white highlights and the vegetation. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals an even varnish and retouching to the horizontal join, as well as scattered retouching to the sky. The foreground and figures are largely free of retouchings. Overall the work is in good condition.
The work is offered in a carved and molded wood frame with a few minor knocks.

Catalogue Note
This work was almost certainly conceived as one of four panels representing the seasons and until very recently it remained with the depiction of Winter, with which it was sold when last on the art market in 1990 (see Provenance). The same general arrangement of this landscape can be seen in the distance of another allegory of autumn by the artist sold in these Rooms, 12 December 2002, lot 11.
