Description

  • Hendrik van Cleve III
  • Nimrod amongst the monuments
  • oil on oak panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 22 April 2004, lot 1.

Condition

The panel, made up of two horizontal planks, is uncradled. The planks are joined by five batons. The surface has a slight convex curve. The paint surface is secure, stable and very clean. The colours, particularly the blue of the sky, are rich and vibrant. Retouching can be seen along the join of the two planks. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals further retouchings to the sky at upper left, as well as retouching to the right of the main tower on the horizon line and at the lower left. Otherwise the figures and monuments are largely free of retouching. Overall the work is in good condition and needs no restoration work. The painting is offered in a simple carved wood frame with gilt sight edge, in good condition.
