Description

  • Sir Joshua Reynolds, P.R.A.
  • Portrait of a lady seated in a landscape, wearing a pink dress and holding a rose
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 5 June 2008, lot 61.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and has a clear and even varnish. The paint surface is secure with no major damages visible and in seemingly very good condition. There is one horizontal line running the width of the picture, perhaps caused by an old fold in the canvas, at a diagonal through the hair of the lady that is visible in raking light. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some retouchings alone this line, and three further lines, one running the length of the canvas from the middle of the sitters scarf at the bottom edge to the top edge at a slight diagonal, the two other lines are shorter and cut across the top right and bottom right corners, all have some retouchings along them. There are other sensitively executed scattered retouchings throughout, the main concentrations of which are in the dark tones to the left of the nape of the sitters neck, and in the pinks of the fabric in her upper arm. Otherwise in fair condition.
