Description
- Jean-Baptiste Greuze
- Head of a young girl
- oil on panel, oval
Provenance
Lord Currie (according to an inscription on the reverse of the frame).
Condition
The circular panel is cradled and flat, the paint surface is stable with a clear and even varnish. There are a handful of scattered retouchings in the left of the background and in the flesh tones of the sitter (predominantly in the neck), all of which are discoloured and visible to the naked eye. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these retouchings and some further cosmetic strengthenings scattered throughout the dark tones of the hair, particularly below the girl's left ear. In overall good condition, much of the original brushwork and impasto in the flesh tones is very well preserved.
