Catalogue Note
The popularity of the theme of the dance by the sea shore, before a view of the Bay of Naples ensured high demand for variations of this composition. Another version of this composition exists, nearly identical in size (38 x 71 cm), in the Fondazione Maurizio e Isabella Alisio, Naples, which is signed and dated 176?.1 The central group of dancing women and children is depicted in Tarantella con Posillipo sullo sfondo, one of four canvases in a Neapolitan private collection, painted in 1756–57.2
