Condition

Both canvases have been reasonably well relined, probably in the last 30 years, although it is difficult to date. The paint surface of both works is secure and clean, barring a slight discoloration to the skies. Red ground can be seen in the dark areas, particularly at both left and right of the figures in the former, and to the left of the white horse in the latter. There is also some thinness in the sky, where the ground can be seen in both. In both pictures the colours remain strong and the details sharp. There are few small scattered retouchings faintly visible in the sky and a retouching measuring approximately 4 by 2 cm just above the town in the latter work. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms these retouchings and reveals other very small scattered retouchings to the figures and animals, as well as the foliage at the left in the latter work. Both works are offered in gilt molded frames in good condition, with a few minor knocks.

Catalogue Note

Federica Spadotto (see Literature) dates these pendants, suffused with a rich light and Venetian tonality, to the late 1750s, and suggests that it was this type of work which allowed Zuccarelli to influence many of the protagonists of eighteenth-century landscape painting, such as Giambettino Cignaroli.
