Description

  • Johann Wenzel Peter
  • A lion and tiger in combat
  • the lower left corner bears the seal of the Kingdom of Sardinia
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Hong Kong, Christie's, 25 April 2004, lot 523 (as by Raden Saleh).

Condition

In fair overall condition. The canvas is lined, the paint surface is secure with a clear and even varnish. There are two old damages visible, one horizontal old well restored tear top left measuring 3 inches in length, and two smaller 1 inch well restored damages on the right margin, all of which are patched on the reverse. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals some further restoration to old damages along the right hand margin, nearer the bottom, and only very few other scattered strengthenings elsewhere in the picture - the animals seemingly remain largely in their original condition. There is a red wax seal at the bottom left corner, the bottom third of which has come away with the paint beneath it revealing a small patch of bare canvas. Offered in a simple gilt wood frame in good condition.
