Catalogue Note
This pair of Italianate landscapes are reminiscent of the late works of Paul Bril before his death in Rome in 1626. He is known to have had a large workshop that is likely to have continued after his death, perhaps under the helm of one of Bril's seven sons, some of whom are recorded as having been painters themselves. It seems feasible that this lot was executed at this time, in the years immediately following the death of the master.
A pen and ink wash drawing by Bril of the same landscape as in the first of this pair is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no. 19799).
