Description

  • Francesco Montelatici, called Cecco Bravo
  • Apollo Flaying Marsyas
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel is cradled. An L-shaped split, measuring approximately 89 by 8 cm is visible near the upper edge. There is good quality impasto in the cloak and hair of Apollo, as well as the instruments in the foreground and the figures in the background. The greens of the background have sunk somewhat, although the reds and yellows remain strong. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals rectouchings around the L-shaped crack, as well as several other horizontal retouchings throughout the panel. Scattered retouching is visible in the face, torso and front leg of Apollo, as well as in the foliage at the upper right. A retouching measuring 12 by 6 cm is revealed to the right of the background figures. Marsyas remains free of retouching, other than the aforementioned horizontal retouchings. The lot is offered in a gilt molded wood frame with punched decoration, with a few knocks.
