The work is unlined. The surface is dirty, with discoloration to the whites. A very small hole in the canvas is visible in the nose. A second very small hole is visible to the left of the cheek. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals no varnish and no signs of retouching. Very unusually, the painting therefore appears to have had no work carried out on it during the course of its history and is in its original condition. The work is offered in what appears to be a period Spanish gilt and black carved frame in good condition.
