Description

  • Jacobus Storck
  • A view of Nieuwersluis on the river Vecht, with the church of Loenen aan de Vecht in the distance
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

F.J. McCarthy.

Condition

The canvas has an old relining which is still sound. The paint surface is generally well preserved and the varnish layer a little dulled. There is a tiny surface scratch in the centre. Inspection under ultra violet reveals no major repairs, but a fair degree of careful old restoration, notably for example to the stern and sides of the main boat, the buildings and clouds around the horizon in the centre of the picture, and details of the figures and rowing boat and foreground water lower left and the house beyond them. Offered in a later English style gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note

The composition follows closely that of a drawing signed A. Storck and dated 1681 but now considered the work of Abraham's son Jacobus, sold New York, Sotheby's, 24 January 2007, lot 62. Related paintings of the same view signed by Jacobus were sold London, Christie's, 18 April 1997, lot 85 (together with a pendant depicting Maarsen and omitting the distant church tower) and London, Bonhams, 8 July 1998, lot 77.
