Description

  • South German School, 15th century
  • Saints Damian and Ottilia
  • a pair, both tempera on pine panel

Provenance

Mittermayer family, Hackenstrasse, Munich;
Pfefferle family, Munich.

Condition

The panel of St Damian has an old cradle and is sound and flat; that of Ottila is held by two old battens on the reverse, and has a very slight bow. Both pictures are now dirty and their varnish layers discoloured. The paint surface of both appears to be in very good condition. That of Ottila is beautifully preserved, with only a diagonal 10 cm scratch running across her robe in the centre in evidence. Damian has an old vertical split running in line with the left hand lion on the throne, and there has been some old retouching to this and some scattered local repairs in his robes and face, but he too is generally very well preserved. Both panels are offered in parcel gilt and red painted wood frames.
