Catalogue Note

This extremely fine example of van Goyen's mature style dates from his most prolific period as a draughtsman.  Although he painted relatively few pictures during the early 1650s, these are the years from which we have the largest numbers of dated drawings - roughly 250 from 1653 alone, his most productive year.  It is possible that van Goyen actually applied dates to some earlier drawings in this year, ready for sale, but even if this was the case, he was clearly extremely active at this time.  Despite this prodigious output, the drawings of this period are still immensely original and lively in execution, which is especially apparent when the drawing is as excellently preserved as this one.
