Catalogue Note
In his twenties Gainsborough made numerous pencil studies from nature investigating contrasts in light and form. These sketches fixed details of the landscape in his visual memory which he could then utilise in his landscape paintings and compositional drawings. This study is from a group of upright landscape drawings made in the early 1750s showing figures and animals on a track carefully made into a composition by trees framing the figure group and background foliage with a bank of burdocks giving the composition greater perspectival depth. Similar examples are in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York and in the Museum of New Zealand in Wellington. We are very grateful to Hugh Belsey, M.B.E, for his help in cataloguing this work.
