Catalogue Note
The sitter was born in 1652 in either Friesland or Amsterdam. He trained in the studio of the landscape painter Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) before traveling extensively in Norway, Newfoundland, New York and Surinam. In 1670 he settled in England where he found success with patrons such as Lord Rednor, the Duke of Schomberg and Lord Ranelagh. He created works for Althorp and Drayton House in Northamptonshire, while three paintings by him are at Chatsworth in Derbyshire. The present portrait appears to be the only surviving image of the artist.
