Catalogue Note

These highly decorative works are 18th century copies after two engravings of the same subjects, executed in 1775 by Jacques Philippe Le Bas.1  Le Bas had based his engravings on two paintings by David Teniers, which at the time were in the collection of the Marquis de Brunoy.  Although the paintings were regarded as a pair when engraved by Le Bas, their datings have subsequently been proved to differ by several years, making it unlikely that Teniers painted them as companion pieces.  The paintings are now housed in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art2 and the Duke of Sutherland,3 respectively.
