Catalogue Note
Also known as the Persian greyhound, the Saluki is one of the oldest domesticated breeds of dog and was widespread throughout the Middle East, from Persia and Egypt to Afghanistan and Sudan, due to their popularity with nomadic tribesman. Revered for their hunting prowess and good looks, the breed was first introduced to Europe in the 12th Century by returning Crusaders. By 1514 a saluki was portrayed by Lucas Cranach the Elder at the feet of Henry IV, Duke of Saxony.1
